Back in 2020 I published a round-up of faux wasp nest decoy patterns – mostly crochet, with one lonely knit option. At the time I noted there wasn’t much for knitters and promised myself I would do something about it. Five years later, living in my log cabin in the woods in upstate NY (and dealing with every kind of insect imaginable), I finally did it.
I designed a knit wasp nest decoy pattern for knitters.
Why a Knitted Version?
Crochet dominates this niche – most of the patterns in my 2020 roundup are crochet, and the texture of crochet actually lends itself well to mimicking a wasp nest. But I’m a knitter first, and I wanted a knitted option with real surface texture.
The Pattern
The nest is worked in the round from the top down in super bulky yarn. It takes one ball to knit, about 3-5 hours, and stuffing is optional. When you buy the pattern, you’ll get access to a private video tutorial for the special stitch that makes the texture.
Does It Work?
In my experience, yes. Hang it in early spring before the scouts start looking and wasps tend to move on. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a fun knit with a practical purpose – my favorite kind of project.
